Santa Monica Studio has shared major updates about the future of the God of War franchise during its San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) panel. The studio officially revealed the release date for God of War: Laufey and confirmed that another game featuring Kratos as the main character is currently in development.
According to the announcement, God of War: Laufey will launch on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The release date follows previous rumors suggesting that the next entry in the series would arrive during the early months of 2027.
Alongside the launch date reveal, Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the next Kratos-focused project is already being worked on. The upcoming title will reportedly continue the story established in God of War: Laufey and expand the direction of the franchise.
During the SDCC panel, Cory Barlog discussed how the team is approaching the future of the series. He explained that the new game is designed to continue previous storylines while preparing the foundation for future entries.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next.”
Barlog also mentioned that the character Phranque has been part of the story since the beginning of development. While the character received mixed reactions from fans, Santa Monica Studio appears to have a larger role planned for him within the game’s narrative.

Actor Jack Quaid, who voices Phranque, also shared his thoughts about the character and his role in the story.
“Phranque is very much an innocent, and there is something where I bring that out of Faye as well.”
The upcoming God of War: Laufey is expected to receive more details later this year as Santa Monica Studio moves closer to launch. Fans can likely expect additional trailers, gameplay footage, and story information ahead of the February 2027 release.
