Eidos Montréal Faces Another Wave of Layoffs as Multiple Projects Are Cancelled

Eidos Montréal is experiencing another round of layoffs, marking yet another challenging moment for the Canadian studio. A report from Insider Gaming states that at least a dozen employees were recently let go, with several confirming their exits publicly through LinkedIn. This development follows a pattern of significant cuts at the studio over the past few years. In 2024, roughly 75 employees were laid off, while 2023 saw nearly 100 departures. These reductions were also paired with the cancellation of the studio’s new Deus Ex project, which had been in development before the restructuring under Embracer Group.

According to the report, most of Eidos Montréal’s current internal projects have now been cancelled. The studio has shifted its primary efforts toward supporting other teams within the Xbox ecosystem. This includes work with Obsidian on Grounded 2 and with Playground Games on the upcoming reboot of Fable. Eidos Montréal has also been involved in outsourcing work for these projects for several years. The move signals a change in direction for the studio, which previously focused heavily on AAA production.

Insider Gaming further notes that a single internal project remains in development at Eidos Montréal. This project, which began back in 2019, is not expected to recover its development costs. Reports suggest that additional layoffs may occur once the studio completes its contracted support tasks for Grounded 2 and Fable. The uncertainty surrounding the remaining project raises questions about the studio’s long-term plans and whether it will return to leading its own major productions in the near future.

Eidos Montréal built its reputation on well-known titles such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The studio also played a key role in the Tomb Raider franchise through its collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. Despite its history of strong releases and a dedicated fanbase, the studio has faced repeated disruptions due to publisher transitions, first during its time with Square Enix and now under Embracer Group’s restructuring efforts.

The cancellation of the Deus Ex revival in 2023 left many fans disappointed, especially since the series has been inactive since 2016. At the time of the cancellation, Adam Jensen’s voice actor, Elias Toufexis, shared a message expressing appreciation for the studio and hope for the future of the franchise. With the latest restructuring update, the franchise’s path forward appears unclear.

Cancelled Internal Projects:

  • Dark fantasy action RPG based on a known vampire IP, featuring melee combat and parkour
  • Sci-fi stealth game believed to be tied to the Deus Ex franchise
  • 3v3 competitive esports set in a futuristic setting
  • Modern point-and-click game with turn-based combat

Outsourcing and Support Work:

  • Ongoing support for Grounded 2 since 2023
  • Contribution to Fable, with more than 100 team members working from 2022 until early 2025
    • The game was described internally as a simulation ARPG
    • Built on the FUEL engine, which is thought to be related to ForzaTech

As Eidos Montréal continues its restructuring and project shifts, the studio’s next chapter remains uncertain. The transition from leading its own AAA productions to taking on support roles shows the changing landscape within its organization, reflecting broader industry pressures that have affected many large development teams in recent years.
