Dygma Lab has officially introduced the Dygma Sonsei, expanding its lineup of ergonomic keyboards with a model designed for users who want a more portable solution without moving away from an ergonomic typing experience. Unlike the company’s fully split keyboards, such as the Defy and Raise, the Sonsei adopts an aluminum unibody design inspired by Alice-style keyboards. The result is a compact keyboard that is easier to carry, faster to set up, and better suited for people who frequently switch between home, office, and travel environments.
The Sonsei keeps several design elements that Dygma users are already familiar with. It features a 56-key layout built around a columnar stagger arrangement, placing keys in vertical columns rather than the traditional horizontal offset. According to Dygma, this layout follows the natural position of the fingers and helps reduce unnecessary hand movement during long typing sessions. The compact layout also minimizes the distance between frequently used keys, making everyday typing and programming more comfortable while keeping the keyboard easy to transport.
Unlike many compact ergonomic keyboards that depend heavily on multiple layers, the Sonsei includes a dedicated number row and four thumb keys on each side. This design makes the keyboard more approachable for users moving from a standard keyboard while still providing enough programmable keys for advanced workflows. Every key can be customized through Dygma’s Bazecor software, allowing users to create custom layouts, macros, shortcuts, and lighting profiles. Bazecor is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS, including both Intel and Apple Silicon systems.
The keyboard uses Gateron KS-33 2.0 low-profile mechanical switches instead of traditional MX-style switches. These low-profile switches help reduce the overall height of the keyboard while maintaining a mechanical typing feel. Users also have access to compatible aftermarket switch options for further customization.
Dygma has also paid attention to the typing experience inside the aluminum chassis. Multiple layers of sound-dampening materials are integrated into the keyboard to reduce noise and improve acoustics. Combined with the rigid aluminum construction, the keyboard is designed to provide a more refined typing experience for daily work and extended use.
The keyboard features a V-shaped layout that is designed to sit directly on top of many laptop keyboards without pressing the keys underneath. This allows users to maintain a more ergonomic typing position while working from a notebook. It also makes the Sonsei a suitable choice for professionals who frequently work outside the office.
Wireless performance is backed by a 2,000mAh battery, which Dygma claims can deliver more than 40 days of battery life with the RGB backlighting disabled. With the lighting set to maximum brightness, the battery is rated for at least eight hours of continuous use, making it suitable for both workdays and travel.
