Crimson Desert Expansion Charting the Unknown Launches October 15 on PC, PS5 and Xbox

Pearl Abyss is taking Crimson Desert beyond its mainland with Charting the Unknown, the game’s first major expansion. Revealed during the latest PlayStation State of Play, the expansion will add ocean travel, new lands, underwater exploration, additional enemies, NPC interactions, and story content when it launches on October 15.

The announcement comes shortly after Pearl Abyss revealed Crimson Desert: Enhanced Edition at Gamescom 2026. Recent changes spotted in the game’s environment had already sparked speculation that the developer was preparing new areas focused on seafaring. Those changes now appear to have been early signs of what was coming.

With Charting the Unknown, players can take control of large galleons and sail across the ocean in search of new locations. Sailing will become another way to explore the world, with the expansion introducing new lands that contain their own quests, characters, enemies, and activities.

Pearl Abyss is also adding underwater exploration through a new diving mechanic. Players will be able to leave their ships behind and explore underwater areas, adding another layer of exploration not part of the game’s original experience.

The expansion will also introduce new threats across its environments. According to Pearl Abyss, players can expect to encounter humans, beasts, and machines while exploring the new regions. The developer has not revealed every enemy coming with the expansion yet, leaving some of its encounters for the full release.

The new content will not be limited to exploration and combat. Pearl Abyss says players will have deeper relationships with NPCs, along with additional ways to interact with towns and local economies. These systems should give the newly introduced areas more activities beyond the main storyline.

The story will also move into new territory, with quests involving political conflicts, historical events, and mysteries surrounding the world of Crimson Desert. Pearl Abyss has teased an “ominous presence in the desert”, suggesting that the expansion will also build on some of the mysteries found in the base game.
