At Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is officially in development. The announcement introduces a new 10-episode anime series set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
This comes after CD PROJEKT RED stated in October 2022 that there were no plans for a second season. Unlike the original, Edgerunners 2 will be a standalone story with different characters and plotlines. It will continue to explore Night City’s themes of technology, survival, and ambition.
Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, story writer, and producer for the project. In a prepared statement, he said, “David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City. And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we’ve done before.”
Key staff from the first season are also coming back. Kanno Ichigo will lead character design, bringing experience from Promare and the first Edgerunners. Masahiko Otsuka, known for work on Gurren Lagann and Promare, will handle the screenplay adaptation.
The series will stream on Netflix, but no release date has been announced.
The first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premiered in September 2022. It received strong critical reception, holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The anime’s launch coincided with Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.6, which added features such as the Wardrobe system, cross-progression, new gigs, melee weapons, firearms, and references to the anime. Following its release, Cyberpunk 2077 saw a significant increase in player numbers and renewed interest in the game.
It is unclear if CD PROJEKT RED will introduce new Cyberpunk 2077 content tied to the second anime. The studio is currently focused on developing The Witcher 4, which remains its primary project.
