2K Games has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will now launch on September 12, 2025, nearly two weeks earlier than its original release date of September 23. No additional changes to the game’s release have been announced, and the official launch trailer still displays the original September date. The reason behind the change was not provided by 2K or Gearbox Software.
Although no explanation has been given, the decision appears to be a strategic move to avoid overlap with the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to arrive later in the fall. Rockstar Games has officially stated that GTA VI will be released in “Autumn 2025,” with leaks and reports suggesting a possible launch in October or November. Based on recent industry trends, many developers have chosen to adjust their release windows to steer clear of competing with Rockstar’s next title.
In previous reports, it was noted that studios were growing cautious about launching games within two weeks of GTA VI. The concern is that such a high-profile title would dominate public attention and potentially impact the performance of other releases. The decision to move Borderlands 4 ahead by nearly two weeks seems to follow that logic, allowing it to stand out during a slightly quieter window.

Borderlands 4 is planned as a multi-platform release, launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store on the same day. There have been discussions around a version for the rumored Nintendo Switch successor, but no details have been shared about that platform.
In addition to the updated launch date, 2K Games has announced a dedicated gameplay showcase set for April 30. The presentation will be part of Sony’s State of Play and will begin at 2:00 PM Pacific Time (5:00 PM Eastern / 10:00 PM British Summer Time). Viewers can watch the broadcast live through PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

The showcase will feature more than 15 minutes of gameplay footage, led by Creative Director Graeme Timmins and Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson. The stream will provide a closer look at core mechanics, including new missions, weapons, action skills, and the world of Kairos. Several familiar characters from earlier games are also expected to return.
Until then, players can visit the official Borderlands website for new artwork, platform-specific pages, and more details about the upcoming release. Pre-orders and wishlist options are currently available across supported digital storefronts.
