AXISRAY LAB Shows BASH Controller With Pressure-Sensitive Stickless Joystick

AXISRAY LAB is taking a different approach to gamepad controls with its BASH controller, which replaces the traditional analog joystick with a stickless design that can detect more than simple directional movement. The company recently demonstrated the controller at gamescom and Tokyo Game Show (TGS), giving players a look at its unusual input system.

Instead of using a conventional joystick mechanism based on carbon film or electromagnetic sensing, BASH uses a GumiTap precision optical sensing component positioned underneath a silicone joystick cap. The sensor reads deformation of the cap and translates those changes into game inputs.

The result is a control system that can recognize planar movement while also detecting the depth of a press and the twisting of the joystick cap. This potentially gives developers additional ways to assign commands without requiring more physical buttons on the controller.

AXISRAY LAB also says BASH can work with joystick caps made from different shapes and materials. That could allow players to change the feel and characteristics of the controls depending on their preferences or the type of game they are playing.

The controller itself includes several other features aimed at modern console and PC gaming. BASH supports three connection modes and uses a modular faceplate that can be replaced. It also includes dual-trigger buttons, two additional rear buttons, an integrated linear motor for feedback, and a six-axis gyroscope for motion controls.

Another unusual feature is the built-in display. BASH includes a control screen that can be used as part of the controller’s interface, while the device can also run built-in 3D games locally. That makes it more than a conventional input device, although it remains to be seen how useful the additional functionality will be outside demonstrations.

The stickless joystick is still the key part of the BASH design. Removing the traditional analog-stick structure could change how the controller handles wear and input detection, but its practical performance will depend on factors such as accuracy, response time, durability, and software support.

  • Stickless joystick with optical sensing
  • Detects movement, pressure, and twisting
  • Compatible with different joystick cap shapes and materials
  • Tri-mode connectivity
  • Replaceable modular faceplate
  • Dual-trigger buttons and two rear buttons
  • Integrated linear motor
  • Six-axis gyroscope
  • Built-in 1,800mAh battery
  • Integrated control screen
  • Can run built-in 3D games locally

AXISRAY LAB’s demonstrations at gamescom and TGS put the controller in front of a wider gaming audience, and BASH offers a different take on a control method that has remained largely unchanged for years. Pricing, availability, supported platforms, and final specifications will be important details to watch as the controller moves closer to release.
