Apple Reportedly Testing LTPO+ Displays With Under-Screen Face ID for iPhone 18 Pro Models

Apple is reportedly testing advanced display technology for its iPhone 18 lineup, aiming to bring under-screen Face ID closer to mass production. Recent reports suggest that Apple has developed prototype devices featuring Face ID components placed beneath the OLED panel, while the front-facing camera remains visible, positioned toward the upper-left corner of the display.

To enable this design, Apple is said to be adopting LTPO+ display technology. LTPO+ is an evolution of existing LTPO panels and supports Under-Display Infrared (UDIR) technology, which allows infrared sensors used by Face ID to function from behind the OLED. This approach is expected to reduce the need for visible cutouts while maintaining Face ID performance.

Due to the complexity of LTPO+ manufacturing, Apple is reportedly limiting its display suppliers to Samsung Display and LG Display. Both companies are believed to be capable of producing these advanced panels at scale. Chinese display maker BOE is said to be excluded from the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max supply chain, as the company may not yet meet the technical requirements for LTPO+ production.

Earlier reports claimed Apple was exploring High Mobility Oxide display technology as a more cost-efficient alternative. However, according to ETNews, the company has instead shifted its focus fully toward LTPO+. Apple is expected to release two traditional flagship models this cycle, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, alongside the rumored iPhone Fold.

Samsung is also reported to be the exclusive display supplier for the iPhone Fold and has reportedly begun mass production of OLED panels for Apple’s redesigned M6 MacBook Pro. This places Samsung in a key position within Apple’s future display plans.

By adopting LTPO+, Apple is moving closer to its long-term goal of an all-screen iPhone. While the front camera remains visible for now, further refinements could eventually allow it to move under the display. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to be Apple’s first devices to ship with LTPO+ technology, with broader adoption likely in future products.
