AMD Prepares Ryzen 7 9700F: 8-Core Zen 5 CPU Without Integrated Graphics

AMD is preparing to expand its upcoming Zen 5 desktop processor lineup with the introduction of the Ryzen 7 9700F, an 8-core, 16-thread processor that is expected to target the mid-range segment. Unlike most current-generation Ryzen 9000 series chips, the 9700F will not include integrated graphics, making it the first “F” suffix SKU in AMDโ€™s latest desktop lineup.

The Ryzen 7 9700F is built on the new Zen 5 microarchitecture and is designed for the AM5 socket platform. While details have not yet been officially confirmed by AMD, support for the processor has already appeared in the latest AGESA 1.2.0.3e BIOS firmware updates released by motherboard vendors. This confirms its existence and suggests an official launch is imminent. Earlier BIOS updates, such as AGESA 1.2.0.3d, had already added support for the Ryzen 9000G series desktop APUs, which will include integrated graphics and are based on the same Zen 5 architecture.

In contrast, the 9700F is distinct from the APU lineup and seems to be positioned more closely to the Ryzen 7 9700X. Specifications for the 9700F include 8 cores and 16 threads, with a total of 8MB L2 cache and 32MB of shared L3 cache. The chip will operate with a 65W thermal design power (TDP) and will offer overclocking support. However, the key difference lies in the lack of an integrated GPU, which is typically a standard feature in the Ryzen 9000 series.

Traditionally, AMD includes a basic integrated GPU consisting of 2 compute units within the I/O die of its desktop CPUs, primarily to offer display output for troubleshooting or light workloads. The Ryzen 7 9700F, however, removes this feature, similar to Intel’s own “F” series CPUs. This change is likely to help reduce costs slightly, making it more attractive to gamers and users who plan to pair the chip with a discrete graphics card.

Clock speeds for the 9700F are expected to be slightly lower than the Ryzen 7 9700X, but performance should remain competitive in multi-threaded applications and gaming scenarios. This model will likely appeal to cost-conscious builders who want Zen 5 performance without paying for features they don’t intend to use.

Pricing remains unconfirmed, but if AMD positions the Ryzen 7 9700F near or below the $300 USD mark, it could offer a compelling value. The Ryzen 7 9700X currently retails for around $304 USD, while the 6-core Ryzen 5 9600X sells for approximately $179 USD. A launch price in the range of $249 USD would place the 9700F in a strong position within the mainstream segment.

With BIOS-level support already in place, the Ryzen 7 9700F may be formally introduced alongside the rest of the Ryzen 9000 series or shortly thereafter. More information is expected to be shared by AMD in the coming weeks as the Zen 5 rollout continues.
