Nexus Mods has acquired SteamDB, bringing one of the most popular Steam tracking websites under new ownership after 13 years of being operated by its founder, Pavel “xPaw” Djundik. The deal was not something many PC gamers expected, particularly because SteamDB has spent most of its existence as an independently operated project supported by its community.
Founded in 2013, SteamDB has become a familiar resource for Steam users looking to track game updates, price changes, player activity, releases, database changes, and other information that is not always easy to find directly through Steam. The website has remained free to use and has operated without traditional advertising, with community donations helping cover the costs of keeping the service online.
According to the acquisition announcement, xPaw had been searching for a new owner because maintaining SteamDB had become a significant responsibility. After running the platform largely on his own for more than a decade, moving the project to an organization with a larger team should reduce the pressure associated with its day-to-day operation.
Nexus Mods also sees SteamDB as a useful source of information for its own platform. The company can use Steam-related data to monitor popular game versions, PC hardware configurations, upcoming releases, and broader trends across the PC gaming market. That could help Nexus Mods decide which games and communities require greater attention as new releases and updates arrive.
For SteamDB users, however, the biggest question is whether the website itself will change. Nexus Mods says the existing SteamDB features will remain free, while the website will continue without advertisements. The company is also planning additional features that will be offered as paid options, although details about those tools have not yet been revealed.
