Minimal has shared the first official look at the Minimal Phone 2, revealing a redesigned smartphone that keeps the physical QWERTY keyboard while making several changes compared with the first-generation model. The company originally introduced the Minimal Phone in 2024 as an Android smartphone designed to reduce distractions through an E Ink display and physical keyboard. The upcoming Minimal Phone 2 takes a different approach by replacing the E Ink panel with an OLED display while retaining the keyboard-based design.
The new phone is said to be smaller than its predecessor and will be available in two colors. Minimal has also improved the physical QWERTY keyboard, although the company has not yet provided detailed information about the changes. The move to an OLED panel should make the phone more suitable for everyday smartphone use, with faster screen response and better support for apps, images and video.
The original Minimal Phone used an E Ink display to discourage activities such as watching videos and continuously scrolling through social media. While that approach helped keep the device focused on basic tasks, some users reported screen ghosting with the E Ink panel. The OLED display on the Minimal Phone 2 should address some of those limitations, although it also gives users more freedom to watch videos, play games, and browse social media.
The redesigned phone has an aluminum body and a front-facing camera positioned above the display. The original model placed its front camera below the screen. A single rear camera and LED flash remain on the back, but Minimal has not revealed the camera specifications yet.
The port and button layout has also changed. The 3.5mm audio jack is no longer located at the bottom of the phone. Prototype images show that Minimal has moved the audio jack to the top edge instead. The SIM tray is now on the right side, while the volume buttons sit on the left. A separate switch is also visible on the top of the frame, although its purpose has not been confirmed.
Minimal has confirmed that the Phone 2 will support 5G connectivity, indicating that the new model will use a newer processor than the original phone. The company has also said that its software has been improved to provide a faster experience.
Minimal has yet to announce the processor, RAM, storage, battery capacity, charging specifications, camera details, or pricing for the Minimal Phone 2. The company is expected to provide more information soon, which should give a clearer picture of how the new phone compares with the original model.
