SanDisk has introduced the Optimus GX PRO 850P, a new M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 SSD designed for Sony PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles. The new SSD storage drive arrives as an officially licensed PlayStation accessory and is built with adjustments focused on console compatibility, performance, and thermal management.

The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P is aimed at PlayStation users who need more internal storage for modern games. With many recent titles requiring large amounts of space, an SSD upgrade allows PS5 and PS5 Pro owners to keep more games installed while maintaining fast loading times.
Key details about the new SSD include:
- Designed specifically for the Sony PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles
- Uses the M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 interface
- Officially licensed PlayStation accessory
- Available in capacities up to 8TB
- Tuned for console performance and thermal conditions
- Based on the Optimus GX PRO 850X family
The new 850P is a console-focused version of the Optimus GX PRO 850X, which SanDisk markets toward PC gamers and hardware enthusiasts. While the two drives share the same product lineup, SanDisk has not revealed whether the 850P uses the same controller, NAND flash, or internal hardware configuration as the PC model.
For comparison, the Optimus GX PRO 850X uses SanDisk’s Black G2 PCIe Gen 4 controller with an 8-channel design and DRAM cache. It is paired with Kioxia 112-layer 3D TLC NAND flash. However, the company has not confirmed if these components are also included in the PlayStation-focused 850P model.

The PlayStation 5 supports internal M.2 SSD upgrades, but drives must meet Sony’s requirements for speed and thermal performance. Since the Optimus GX PRO 850P carries official licensing, SanDisk appears to have optimized the drive for operation inside the PS5 expansion slot.
SanDisk has not announced pricing or availability details for the Optimus GX PRO 850P. The pricing could differ from the Optimus GX PRO 850X, which reaches a high cost at larger capacities. The 8TB version of the 850X is currently listed at around $2,700, making it a premium option for users looking for maximum storage.
The company is expected to share more specifications, including performance numbers and pricing, closer to the SSD’s retail launch. For PS5 and PS5 Pro owners looking for a high-capacity internal storage upgrade, the Optimus GX PRO 850P will be another option in the growing PCIe Gen 4 SSD market.
