Fumito Ueda Reveals “Gen ATLAS” at Summer Game Fest 2026 With First Gameplay Footage

Fumito Ueda, the creator behind some of the most recognizable artistic video games of the last two decades, has officially revealed new details about his upcoming project during Summer Game Fest 2026. The game, previously known as Project Robot, now carries the official title Gen ATLAS and has also received its first gameplay presentation alongside updated release information.

Developed by genDesign, the studio led by Ueda, Gen ATLAS marks the team’s return to large-scale single-player design focused on exploration and atmospheric storytelling. The game follows a player who awakens alone on a deserted planet filled with massive structures, abandoned technology, and shifting environments that appear to hold remnants of a long-lost civilization. As players move deeper into the world, they encounter enormous robotic entities that play a key role in progression and environmental navigation.

Gen ATLAS is being developed as a third-person open-world action-adventure title, with emphasis on environmental discovery rather than fast-paced combat systems. The gameplay shown during the event highlighted wide open landscapes, slow exploration sequences, and encounters with towering machines that reshape access to different parts of the world.

The project continues the design direction seen in earlier works such as ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, all of which were directed by Ueda. While Gen ATLAS appears to introduce a more expansive setting, the focus remains on minimal storytelling and environmental detail, leaving interpretation largely to the player.

The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. On PC via Epic Games Store, the launch will first be available through the Epic Games Store due to publishing arrangements with Epic Games. A Steam release is expected after the exclusivity period ends, although no timeline has been provided yet.

No official release date was announced during the showcase, but the trailer confirmed that development is actively progressing. The presentation focused more on tone and world-building rather than combat systems or progression mechanics, suggesting that further details will be shared in future updates.

Key details revealed so far:

  • Official title confirmed as Gen ATLAS
  • Developed by genDesign under Fumito Ueda
  • Third-person open-world action-adventure gameplay
  • Set on an abandoned alien planet with massive structures
  • Features large robotic entities that influence exploration
  • Planned for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC
  • PC version launching first on Epic Games Store
  • Steam release planned after exclusivity period
  • No release date announced yet
  • Focus on atmospheric storytelling and exploration

With Gen ATLAS, expectations remain high given Ueda’s track record of delivering games that rely heavily on mood, visual storytelling, and emotional pacing. While gameplay systems are still not fully detailed, the reveal suggests a project that continues his established design philosophy while expanding into a more open-world structure. More updates are expected as development continues.
