Destiny 2 continues to see a sharp drop in daily activity, reaching around 15,000 concurrent players—far from its peak of more than 316,000 players recorded nearly three years ago. The live-service shooter has faced challenges with player retention, seasonal engagement, and the long-term demand for new content. Even with ongoing updates, the current numbers highlight a slowdown for a game that once maintained a strong daily base.

Despite this decline, reports from two well-known leak sources suggest that Bungie is preparing the next chapter of the franchise. Colony Deaks and CheddaLeaks, both active on X and known for sharing information related to Destiny and Bungie’s internal plans, claim that Destiny 3 has entered early development. Their posts indicate that the studio has already allocated resources to the project, even as Destiny 2’s performance has weakened.
The timing is notable, considering reports that Sony recorded losses of about $204 million on Destiny 2 by early November 2025. These financial figures surfaced after a period of restructuring at Bungie, which included a shift in long-term planning and a renewed focus on future projects. The decision to begin development on Destiny 3 suggests that Sony and Bungie may still view the franchise as a significant part of their long-range strategy.

Information about Destiny 3 remains limited. According to the leakers, the game may still be roughly five years away from launch. Early speculation suggests that it could continue the larger narrative arc connected to the Fate saga, which has been central to Destiny 2’s recent expansions. However, no concrete storyline details, gameplay features, or engine updates have been shared at this stage.
CheddaLeaks also mentioned that a “Destiny 2 Classic” project received approval, potentially signaling interest in revisiting earlier content or systems. That said, there is no clear indication of how far that project has progressed. Current reports point to Destiny 3 taking priority, which may place the classic project behind it in Bungie’s development queue.

With Destiny 3 described as being in an “extremely early” phase, players should not expect official announcements, previews, or gameplay footage for quite some time. The development timeline aligns with Bungie’s longer cycles for major releases, which often span several years.
For now, the focus remains on how Bungie will maintain Destiny 2’s remaining community while preparing a new entry in the franchise. If the reports are accurate, the next major shift in the Destiny series is still years away, leaving room for additional updates, patches, and seasonal developments as the studio transitions toward its next release.
