Kratos May Wield an Egyptian Sword in Next God of War, New Rumor Claims

A new rumor suggests that Kratos could wield an ancient Egyptian weapon in the next God of War title. The information comes from leaker Tom Henderson, who shared details during the most recent Insider Gaming podcast.

Henderson explained that Sony Santa Monica is currently developing two separate projects within the God of War franchise. The first is said to be a smaller 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off, rumored to be announced at the upcoming PlayStation State of Play event, expected before the end of September. The second project is reportedly a new mainline entry, continuing the saga of Kratos.

During the discussion, Henderson noted that Kratos would be equipped with a new weapon in this sequel, describing it as a curved Egyptian sword. While he did not recall the exact name, the description matches the Khopesh, a sickle-shaped blade that originated in ancient Egypt from earlier battle axes.

The potential introduction of the Khopesh could be more than just a weapon upgrade. It may suggest a shift toward Egyptian mythology as the setting for the next chapter of the series. This would not be without precedent, as God of War has often aligned its weapons with the culture of its mythological backdrop. The Norse titles introduced the Leviathan Axe, a weapon tied to northern traditions, making the Egyptian Khopesh a natural extension if the series moves into that mythology.

Hints of an Egyptian direction have surfaced before. Prior to the release of God of War (2018), Game Director Cory Barlog stated that Egyptian or Mayan mythology were among the leading candidates for the franchise’s future settings after the Norse saga.

It has been nearly three years since the release of God of War Ragnarök. While the spin-off project could arrive sooner, the next mainline installment is expected to be further away from release. Until then, the franchise will also expand into television, with Amazon Prime Video preparing a live-action adaptation. The series is scheduled to begin filming its first season in March 2026.

If the latest rumor proves accurate, Kratos’s next journey may see him trade the frozen landscapes of the north for the sands and myths of ancient Egypt, armed with a weapon that carries centuries of history.
