2K and Gearbox Software have officially announced that Borderlands 4, the latest entry in the long-running looter-shooter series, is now available for pre-order. The game will release globally on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. A release for Nintendo Switch 2 is also scheduled for later in the year.
The announcement comes alongside confirmation of several key features and content plans. Borderlands 4 introduces four new playable Vault Hunters, each equipped with distinct abilities. As with previous titles in the franchise, players will have access to a vast arsenal of procedurally generated weapons. This time, players will explore the new planet Kairos, which is being described as the most expansive Borderlands world to date.
Gearbox has implemented new traversal mechanics aimed at enhancing exploration across the planet’s diverse environments. The main narrative centers around the Vault Hunters’ conflict with the Timekeeper and his faction, known as the Order. Additional details about the storyline remain under wraps, but the developers emphasize both continuity with the series and accessibility for new players.

The game will launch with a structured roadmap for post-release content. Both free updates and paid downloadable content (DLC) are planned to roll out after launch. Paid content will include new Vault Hunters, additional regions on Kairos, story and side missions, new enemy types, and more. Gearbox confirmed that more information on these expansions will be shared closer to release.
Three versions of Borderlands 4 are now available for pre-order:
- Standard Edition ($69.99) includes the base game.
- Deluxe Edition ($99.99) includes the base game, Bounty Pack Bundle (four DLC packs with new areas and missions), four Vault Cards, new gear and weapons, vehicle content, Vault Hunter cosmetics, and the Firehawk’s Fury Weapon Skin.
- Super Deluxe Edition ($129.99) includes everything from the Deluxe Edition plus the Vault Hunter Pack (two additional story packs, new characters, maps, gear, and cosmetics) and the Ornate Order Pack (four additional character skins and customization options).
Pre-ordering any edition of the game grants access to the Gilded Glory Pack. This includes an exclusive Vault Hunter Skin, a Weapon Skin, and an ECHO-4 Drone Skin.

Borderlands 4 has been rated M for Mature by the ESRB. PC players will also have access to the title through NVIDIA GeForce NOW, offering cloud gaming capabilities on supported devices. The game is being marketed as both a continuation of the established Borderlands experience and an introduction point for newcomers to the series.
2K and Gearbox have not yet provided a firm release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, but confirmed that it will follow the initial September launch. Additional announcements and gameplay previews are expected in the coming months as the launch window approaches.
