8BitDo has officially announced the FlipPad Mobile Vertical Screen Game Controller, a new accessory designed for smartphone gamers who prefer physical controls over touchscreen input. The company confirmed that the controller will open for pre-orders on July 15, with the first shipments scheduled to begin on July 30. The FlipPad will be available for $30, making it one of the more affordable mobile gaming controllers in the company’s lineup.
The FlipPad features a compact design that connects directly to a compatible smartphone through a USB-C connector. Instead of using the telescopic design found on many mobile controllers, 8BitDo has chosen a flip-style mechanism that folds over the phone’s display. This design allows the controller to remain compact while securely attaching to the device, making it easier to carry when not in use.
The controller also adopts a retro-inspired appearance that matches the company’s well-known design language. It comes with black directional buttons, burgundy ABXY buttons, gray Start and Select buttons, and six white buttons that are expected to function as shoulder and trigger controls. This button layout gives users additional inputs that are useful for games requiring more than the standard face buttons.
According to the announcement, the FlipPad is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, allowing it to support a wide range of smartphones equipped with a USB-C port. This cross-platform compatibility means users do not have to purchase separate controllers for different mobile operating systems.
At launch, the controller will only be available in a beige finish. While 8BitDo has not shared plans for additional color options, the selected color follows the retro-inspired theme seen in several of the company’s previous gaming accessories.
