Starfield is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026, with Bethesda Softworks confirming the release date after months of speculation. The launch on Sony’s platform will align with a major free update and a new story expansion, both aimed at expanding the game’s systems and content offering.
The free “Free Lanes” update is positioned as the largest update released for the game so far. Bethesda says the update has been shaped by player feedback since launch, with changes targeting traversal, progression, and combat. One of the more notable additions is a new vehicle designed to improve surface exploration, along with a new spacesuit and additional weapons. The update also expands points of interest across planets, giving players more activities and encounters while exploring different systems.

Travel between planets is also being adjusted through a newly added cruise mode. This feature allows for smoother interplanetary movement and introduces more interaction opportunities within the ship during longer journeys. Players can engage with crew members or manage ship systems while traveling, which adds more context to exploration without interrupting the pacing.
Progression systems are being extended with new materials that can be used to upgrade both weapons and ships. Bethesda is also making adjustments to enemy behavior, aiming to increase encounter variety and improve overall combat balance. These changes are expected to make engagements less predictable, particularly during extended exploration or mission-based gameplay.

Alongside the update, the “Terran Armada” DLC introduces a new storyline built around an invading military faction attempting to reshape the settled systems. The expansion features a mix of ground-based combat and large-scale space engagements, including orbital dogfights. Players will also gain access to a new robotic companion connected to the Terran faction, adding another layer to squad-based gameplay.
The DLC further expands the game’s arsenal with a new set of weapons that emphasize a more industrial design and offer deeper modification options. Early footage shared in Bethesda’s developer deep-dive highlights a mix of structured missions and open-ended combat scenarios tied to the Armada’s presence across multiple systems.

With the PS5 release now confirmed and tied to a substantial content drop, the upcoming launch reflects a continued focus on refining core gameplay while adding new layers to exploration and combat.
