RPCS3 Update Adds Encrypted ISO Support, Simplifies PS3 Game Loading

The RPCS3 project continues to refine its workflow with a new update that introduces support for encrypted PlayStation 3 ISO files. The change removes the need for manual decryption, a step that has long been part of the emulator setup process for disc-based backups.

Previously, users had to convert encrypted ISO images into decrypted versions before the emulator could recognize them. This process required additional tools and time, especially for those handling larger game libraries. With the latest update, RPCS3 can now read encrypted ISOs directly, provided that users supply the correct disc key alongside the image file. This adjustment cuts down on preparation time and reduces the number of steps needed before launching a game.

The update builds on earlier improvements that enabled direct ISO mounting, which already reduced reliance on extracted folder formats. Combining both features allows users to keep their backups in a format that is closer to the original PlayStation 3 Blu-ray discs. This can be useful for maintaining cleaner storage and preserving the original structure of game data without converting files into multiple formats.

While the change may appear incremental, it improves everyday usability for those regularly using the emulator. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to make PS3 emulation more accessible without requiring deep familiarity with file conversion tools. Compared to traditional workflows, where decryption was unavoidable, the process is now more direct.

Compatibility remains a strong point for RPCS3. The emulator can run more than 70 percent of the PlayStation 3 library without major issues, while a large portion of the remaining titles are still playable, albeit with minor graphical inconsistencies or performance quirks. As development continues, updates like encrypted ISO support contribute to a smoother and more consistent user experience across a wider range of games.
