Raspberry Pi 500+ Launches with Mechanical Keyboard, SSD Storage, and 16 GB RAM

Raspberry Pi has officially launched the Raspberry Pi 500+, the latest entry in its series of all-in-one desktop computers. Building on the design of the Raspberry Pi 500, this model introduces upgraded hardware and a redesigned keyboard, providing an improved desktop experience for learners, hobbyists, and developers.

The new system is powered by the Raspberry Pi 5 platform, featuring a 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, dual 4K video outputs, and dual-band Wi-Fi. The 500+ comes pre-fitted with 16 GB of LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM and a 256 GB M.2 SSD with Raspberry Pi OS installed. The internal bay supports additional PCIe peripherals using the 2280 M.2 format, giving users the flexibility to expand or replace storage. Booting from SD cards or external USB SSDs remains supported.

Priced at $200, the Raspberry Pi 500+ is available in two configurations. The standard version ships as a complete computer integrated into a keyboard, while the $220 Desktop Kit adds a Raspberry Pi mouse, a 27 W USB-C power supply, a 2 m micro HDMI to HDMI cable, and a copy of the Raspberry Pi Beginner’s Guide (5th Edition).

The most notable change from earlier models is the move to a mechanical keyboard. Each key uses a Gateron KS-33 Blue switch with a custom stem, providing a more tactile typing experience. The keyboard includes individually addressable RGB backlighting controlled by an RP2040 microcontroller running QMK firmware. This allows extensive customization of key functions and lighting profiles.

Each keycap is spray-painted, laser-etched, and compatible with most aftermarket keycap sets. A key puller is included for those who want to customize the layout further. This design makes the Raspberry Pi 500+ more versatile for users who prefer different switch or keycap configurations.

With 16 GB of RAM, the Raspberry Pi 500+ offers the largest memory capacity yet for any Raspberry Pi product. Combined with the pre-installed SSD, the system is designed to handle heavier workloads, from software development and data analysis to running multiple applications simultaneously.

This makes the Raspberry Pi 500+ a capable option for education, home computing, and hobbyist projects, while maintaining compatibility with the broad ecosystem of Raspberry Pi accessories and software.

The Raspberry Pi 500+ is available now through official Raspberry Pi retailers. With its combination of modern performance, customizable keyboard, and integrated storage, the device continues Raspberry Pi’s approach of making compact, accessible computing solutions for a wide range of users.
