Qualcomm Begins Testing Next-Generation Snapdragon X2 Series Laptop Processors

October 1, 2024

Qualcomm has begun testing its next-generation Snapdragon X2 series processors, following the earlier release of its Snapdragon X Elite/Plus series a few months ago. This new series, internally identified by the SoC codename “SC8480XP,” is part of Qualcomm’s continued effort to strengthen its presence in the laptop processor market. The codename for this SoC, “Project Glymur,” marks a departure from the company’s tradition of naming processors after locations in Hawaii. Instead, the Snapdragon X2 series draws inspiration from Iceland, specifically named after Glymur, the highest waterfall in the country.

While Qualcomm has yet to disclose detailed specifications regarding core counts or clock speeds for the Snapdragon X2, it is known that the CPU cores will build on Nuvia’s Oryon design. This design stems from Nuvia’s development efforts prior to Qualcomm’s acquisition of the team, indicating that the new cores will likely be an evolution of the Oryon architecture, tailored for high-performance laptop applications.

Initial reports suggest that Qualcomm began testing the SC8480XP SoC during the summer months of July and August, evaluating various configurations of RAM and storage. The company is likely fine-tuning the performance of the new processor with different memory speeds, determining optimal configurations for the upcoming platform. These tests are also expected to help establish guidelines for storage options, ensuring that the next-generation platform performs efficiently across a range of devices.

As the testing phase continues, key details about the Snapdragon X2 series, such as core counts and clock speeds, remain undisclosed. However, there is growing anticipation surrounding Qualcomm’s next step in the laptop market, with many looking forward to seeing how the company’s latest advancements will compete with existing mobile computing platforms.
