MachineGames has clarified its future plans for the Wolfenstein series, confirming that BJ Blazkowicz’s story is not finished. Studio head Jerk Gustafsson revealed in a recent interview that the series was always envisioned as a trilogy and that the team still has a narrative left to deliver.
The comments came during The Making of Wolfenstein, a new NoClip documentary (via PC Gamer). Gustafsson explained that when MachineGames first began development on Wolfenstein: The New Order in 2014, the creative direction already included a roadmap for a three-part arc centered on Blazkowicz.
“We have always seen this as a trilogy. That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least [BJ], what would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one,” Gustafsson said. “I think that’s important to say, because—at least I hope—we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
The Wolfenstein franchise has remained one of the most recognizable names in first-person shooters since its origins in the early 1990s. Under MachineGames, the series was rebooted with The New Order in 2014, followed by The New Colossus in 2017, and then Wolfenstein: Youngblood in 2019, which featured Blazkowicz’s twin daughters as protagonists. Since Youngblood, the studio’s attention has largely shifted to the upcoming Indiana Jones game, leading to speculation that Wolfenstein may have been sidelined.
Alongside the games, a television adaptation of Wolfenstein is also in production, developed in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video. The project is expected to expand the franchise beyond gaming, though details about the cast, release dates, and plot remain limited.
While no release window has been announced for the next installment in BJ Blazkowicz’s story, Gustafsson’s statement confirms that the third chapter remains on MachineGames’ agenda. For longtime fans of the franchise, this indicates that the studio still intends to conclude the storyline it began more than a decade ago.
With Indiana Jones currently in active development, it may take time before MachineGames shifts back to Wolfenstein. However, the assurance that the trilogy is still planned provides clarity about the franchise’s future direction.
