Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Reportedly in Development with Updated Gameplay Features

A new report from Halo Leaks claims that Microsoft and 343 Industries are preparing a full remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. The project is said to rebuild the classic title using modern development tools while introducing updated gameplay systems.

According to the leak, the remake will allow Master Chief to sprint, a movement option not present in the 2001 release. It will also feature modern gameplay mechanics inspired by recent Halo entries. These updates suggest that the remake will play differently from the original but remain faithful to its story and setting.

The source added that the new version’s gameplay could resemble that of the upcoming Halo multiplayer title, which may be part of Halo 7. The goal appears to be a balance between the series’ familiar design and modern controls used in today’s shooters.

Rumors indicate that the remake is being co-developed with Abstraction, a studio under Virtuos. The same team has contributed to several high-profile remasters in recent years. Reports suggest the game will use a combination of Unreal Engine 5 and the original Blam engine, similar to the approach taken with the Oblivion Remastered project that mixed Unreal Engine 5 with Bethesda’s Creation engine.

This hybrid approach could allow the developers to retain the visual identity of the original while delivering improved lighting, animations, and physics. The remake is also expected to focus entirely on the campaign, with no multiplayer component included.

The project may launch in 2026, aligning with the 25th anniversary of the Xbox brand. Microsoft has already planned several releases tied to the anniversary, including Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, and a new Forza Horizon title. A remake of Halo: Combat Evolved during this period would fit naturally into the company’s celebration of its core franchises.

So far, Microsoft and 343 Industries have not made any official announcements. However, developers previously mentioned that more details about their next project could be shared at the Halo World Championship 2025, scheduled for October 24–26 at the Seattle Convention Center. With the event approaching, there is growing anticipation for confirmation.

If accurate, the Halo: Combat Evolved remake would bring one of the most influential Xbox games to a new generation of players. The project appears to aim at preserving the legacy of the original while adapting it to modern platforms and expectations.
