A new report suggests that Grand Theft Auto IV may soon be making its way to modern consoles, potentially offering players a chance to revisit Liberty City with updated hardware support. The information comes from a string of online discussions involving Rockstar Games insiders and community leakers, who believe the long-rumored port is already in development and could be released by the end of this year or early next.
According to @videotechuk_ on X (formerly Twitter), Rockstar Games leaker Tez2 shared that someone at Rockstar previously mentioned the port internally, and that development should have started around a year ago. While the company has not officially confirmed anything, the timing lines up with recent events, including the takedown of the fan-made Liberty City Preservation Project. That mod had recreated the entire map of GTA IV within GTA V, and its removal raised questions among fans about possible official plans for Liberty City.
This potential port is part of a broader pattern of Rockstar revisiting its older titles. Tez2 also hinted that Max Payne 3 could receive similar treatment, possibly after GTA IV gets released. The timing could align with the launch of the upcoming Max Payne 1 and 2 remake, currently in development by Remedy Entertainment. If both titles are released or announced close together, it may lead to a bundle or special edition release under Take-Two Interactive’s publishing arm.
Speculation around a return of Grand Theft Auto IV has surfaced several times over the past decade, with various reports pointing to possible remasters or ports. However, none of these projects have been officially acknowledged or released. One attempt in the past, reportedly shelved due to resource constraints, further fueled fan frustration.
With Grand Theft Auto VI now officially delayed until May 2026, Rockstar and Take-Two have a sizeable gap in their release calendar. Reintroducing GTA IV during this period would give the publisher an opportunity to keep interest in the franchise alive while also tapping into the nostalgia of long-time players.
Whether this port will come with visual upgrades, gameplay improvements, or quality-of-life updates is unknown. Players still remember the launch of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which faced criticism for bugs and performance issues. A smoother launch for any new port would be essential to avoid similar backlash.
As of now, Rockstar has not made any announcements regarding Grand Theft Auto IV‘s return. Until there’s official word, fans will have to wait and see if Liberty City is truly on its way back to consoles.
