Ghost of Yōtei Sells 3.3 Million in First Month – PS5 Shipments Reach 84.2 Million Units

Sony has reported that PlayStation 5 shipments have reached 84.2 million units since the console’s launch. In the second quarter of 2025, the company shipped 3.9 million units, a modest increase compared to 3.8 million in the same quarter of 2024. While the PS5 continues to sell steadily, overall sales remain behind the launch period of the PlayStation 4. Analysts point to multiple factors for this gap, including a smaller install base and ongoing production constraints. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox is experiencing its weakest console generation in terms of sales since the original Xbox, highlighting a contrast in the current console market.

In terms of software, PlayStation continues to see growth. Total game sales in Q2 2025 reached 80.3 million units, up from 77.7 million in Q2 2024. First-party titles contributed significantly to this increase, with 6.3 million units sold this quarter, compared to 5.3 million in the previous year. A key driver is Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei, which sold 3.3 million copies in its first thirty-two days. While these numbers are slightly behind those of Ghost of Tsushima, the difference is expected due to the larger PS4 user base during the earlier launch.

Ghost of Yōtei builds on the core experience of its predecessor, offering players an expanded narrative, refined combat mechanics, and enhanced open-world exploration. Some elements may feel familiar to returning players, but the game introduces enough new features to maintain engagement. Sucker Punch plans to release additional content, including a DLC similar to the first game, and a Legends multiplayer mode is scheduled to launch next year, which could further boost first-party game sales.

Sony also highlighted growth in its PlayStation Network. Monthly active users rose from 116 million in Q2 2024 to 119 million in Q2 2025. This increase reflects consistent engagement across both existing and new PS5 users, supported by ongoing content releases and first-party game launches. The growth in network users suggests a healthy ecosystem for Sony, combining hardware sales with software and online service adoption.

Overall, Sony’s Q2 2025 report indicates that the PlayStation platform continues to expand, with steady hardware shipments, rising game sales, and a growing online user base. The performance of Ghost of Yōtei demonstrates the continued appeal of first-party titles, and upcoming content releases are likely to maintain momentum throughout the year.
