Borderlands 4 Canceled for Nintendo Switch 2 as Take-Two Pauses Development

Take-Two Interactive has canceled the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4, according to its latest quarterly earnings report. The game was removed from the company’s updated release schedule, signaling a change in plans for the anticipated title on Nintendo’s upcoming console.

In a statement shared with Variety, Take-Two spokesperson Alan Lewis said the company made the “difficult decision to pause development” on the Nintendo Switch 2 version, referring to it as a specific SKU. He added that the publisher’s focus remains on delivering quality post-launch content and ongoing optimization for the versions launching on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.

Lewis also noted that Take-Two continues to work closely with Nintendo. The company still plans to release other titles on the platform, including PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26, and expressed interest in bringing more games to Nintendo Switch 2 in the future.

Borderlands 4 was previously expected to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in October, about a month after its debut on other platforms. However, in late September, the Switch 2 version was delayed without a revised release date. The absence of further updates had led to speculation about its status.

Earlier this year, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford had spoken positively about developing Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2. He described the console as a strong fit for the game and highlighted its hardware capabilities, cooperative features, and compact design.

Take-Two has not provided detailed reasons for the cancellation. During the same earnings call, the publisher confirmed it is preparing to begin the marketing campaign for Grand Theft Auto VI this summer, indicating its near-term priorities.
