Ayaneo Suspends NEXT 2 Handheld PC Preorders as Memory and Storage Costs Surge

Ayaneo has suspended preorders for its NEXT 2 handheld gaming PC after facing significantly higher component costs than expected. The company shared the update through its Indiegogo campaign page, explaining that rising prices for memory and NAND flash storage have made the device financially unviable at the originally announced pricing. The decision reflects ongoing pressure across the hardware industry, where fluctuations in component supply continue to impact smaller manufacturers more heavily than large OEM partners.

The NEXT 2 was planned as one of the most powerful handheld gaming PCs in the market, featuring processors based on the latest architecture from AMD. The base model was expected to ship with the Ryzen AI Max 385 processor, paired with 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory and 1 TB of SSD storage, with a starting price of $1,999. Ayaneo also announced higher-end configurations equipped with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, offering up to 128 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage. Despite premium pricing reaching $4,299 for top-tier variants, the company states the hardware would still be sold at a loss due to unexpected increases in component pricing.

“When we launched NEXT 2, storage prices were already at a very high level. At that time, we were already under significant cost pressure. However, considering that many AYANEO fans had been looking forward to this product for a long time, we still decided to release it as planned and open pre-orders so as not to disappoint our supporters.

However, after the Chinese New Year, when we communicated with our suppliers again to confirm the latest storage procurement prices, we found that storage prices had increased to several times higher than before the holiday. Under such circumstances, the overall cost of the product has become far higher than our current selling price. Therefore, after careful consideration, we have decided to suspend the pre-orders of NEXT 2.

In fact, even before the launch of NEXT 2, storage prices had already been rising for several months. At that time, we believed the price might be approaching its peak. Even if it meant making little to no profit—or even a slight loss—we still decided to move forward with the launch. However, what we did not expect was that storage prices would not only continue to rise but would increase even more rapidly. At present, the total cost of the product has far exceeded our selling price, even approaching twice the price we originally set. Under such circumstances, continuing to sell this product is no longer sustainable.”

Ayaneo stated on Indiegogo that it initially decided to move forward with the launch despite increasing component costs in order to meet expectations from its community. The company believed pricing might stabilize over time, even if early sales generated minimal profit margins. However, the continued increase in storage costs pushed total expenses far beyond the planned retail pricing, forcing the company to suspend preorders for the NEXT 2.

While the company has not confirmed whether the device will return to the market later, the decision highlights ongoing challenges in producing high-performance handheld PCs that rely on expensive memory and storage configurations. Market conditions surrounding NAND flash and LPDDR5X components remain uncertain, and smaller hardware makers may continue to adjust product strategies depending on supply pricing trends.
