Major motherboard manufacturers, including ASUS, ASRock, GIGABYTE, and MSI, have introduced their latest AM5 motherboards, powered by the X870E and X870 chipsets. These boards are designed to support the AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors, along with backward compatibility for the AMD 8000 and 7000 series CPUs. The new lineup targets high-performance users and enthusiasts, offering robust VRM designs, advanced I/O options, and support for WiFi 7 and USB 4.
The current releases are all in the ATX form factor, but mATX and ITX models are expected later this year. These motherboards support DDR5 memory, with a native speed of 5600 MT/s, and select models capable of exceeding 8000 MT/s. The X870E chipset is built around two Promontory 21 dies, providing extensive connectivity options, including support for Gen 5 GPUs and SSDs, with 24 Gen 5 CPU lanes and a combination of 8 Gen 4 and 12 Gen 3 lanes from the chipset. The X870 variant features a single die, retaining the Gen 5 lanes but offering reduced PCH lanes with 4 Gen 4 and 8 Gen 3.
