Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro Update Adds PSSR Upscaling, Ray Tracing Improvements, and New Graphics Modes

Cyberpunk 2077 continues to receive technical updates several years after its original launch, with CD Projekt Red rolling out a new patch on April 8 to improve the PlayStation 5 Pro experience. Details shared through the PlayStation Blog confirm that the update focuses on improving visual fidelity while also giving players more flexibility in how the game performs on Sony’s upgraded hardware. The patch will be available at no extra cost for players using the PS5 Pro version of the game.

The update introduces support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), allowing the game to upscale its image to 4K resolution. By leveraging PSSR, image clarity is improved while performance remains consistent and stable. It also broadens the implementation of ray tracing features, adding ray-traced lighting, reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, skylight illumination, and emissive lighting. These enhancements aim to refine the visual presentation of Night City, especially in scenes where complex lighting and reflective surfaces play a significant role.

The enhanced version introduces three graphics modes designed to suit different gameplay preferences. Ray Tracing Pro mode enables the full range of ray tracing features and targets 40 FPS on displays that support variable refresh rate, or 30 FPS without VRR enabled. This mode prioritizes visual detail, offering more advanced lighting and reflection accuracy than other options in the game.

Performance mode is designed for players seeking higher frame rates, targeting up to 90 FPS while maintaining high image quality. CD Projekt Red has not provided detailed information on which graphical settings are adjusted in this mode, but the higher frame-rate target suggests that some visual effects may be scaled back to achieve smoother gameplay.

Ray Tracing mode sits between the other two options, targeting 60 FPS while enabling selected ray tracing improvements. Similar to Performance mode, the developer has not specified the exact resolution or the complete list of enabled features, but the mode is intended to offer a balance between visual quality and responsiveness.

Cyberpunk 2077 has seen continued technical updates since its 2020 release, with multiple patches improving performance, stability, and graphics across platforms. The addition of PSSR and expanded ray-tracing options on PS5 Pro shows continued support for newer hardware, ensuring the game can take advantage of improved processing and graphical capabilities while giving players more control over how it runs on their system.
