The Alters to Receive a Major Free Update on December 8 With New Modes, Features, and Customization

11 Bit Studios has announced that The Alters will receive a free major content update on December 8, bringing new systems, expanded customization features, and several additions guided by community feedback. The update is one of the most extensive released for the game, aiming to refine the overall experience for both new players and long-time fans.

The Alters is a sci-fi survival title centered around Jan Dolski, the lone member of an expedition that crash-landed on an unfamiliar and hostile planet. To stay alive, Jan uses a rare substance known as Rapidium to create alternative versions of himself. These versions, known as the Alters, represent different choices Jan made in the past, forming a diverse and complex crew aboard the mobile base. This concept shapes the game’s narrative direction, offering branching paths and moral decisions that influence each playthrough.

A key addition arriving in the update is Relax Mode. According to the studio, this feature was developed in direct response to feedback from players who wanted an option that focuses more on exploration and storytelling rather than survival pressure. This mode reduces the game’s difficulty, offering a more accessible entry point for those who prefer progressing at a slower pace.

The save system is also being reworked. The update introduces the ability to save progress when exiting the game, improving flexibility for players. Autosave will now activate after dialogues with other Alters, reducing the chance of losing progress during key interactions. However, the studio notes that the saves created during previous open playtests will not be compatible outside testing environments.

Players will also gain access to a new base module called the Gamer’s Den. Designed by the in-game Scientist and inspired by a meaningful location in Jan Dolski’s life, this module introduces new activities, including a card game that players can enjoy between their base-management tasks. The studio revealed that the mini-game was originally developed and tested inside their office kitchen before being adapted for the game.

Photo Mode will allow players to capture scenes from their journey using adjustable camera angles, lighting controls, and composition tools. This feature enables players to document their progress or recreate recognizable moments inspired by films and games.

The update expands customization options for both the base and the player character. Each base module can now be personalized with new exterior designs that include animated elements. New spacesuit skins will also be introduced, featuring designs such as the Molly suit, Frostpunk suit, and Deathowl suit. These additions give players more control over how they present their version of Jan.
