Lexar Introduces Updated EQ790 NVMe SSD with Passive Heatsink

Lexar has expanded its solid-state drive lineup with a new version of the EQ790 M.2 NVMe SSD, now equipped with an integrated passive heatsink. This update builds on the existing Lexar EQ790 series while improving thermal management for high-performance workloads and gaming environments.

The EQ790 connects through a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and comes in the widely used M.2 2280 form factor. With the heatsink attached, the drive measures 80 × 24 × 9.7 mm, keeping it compatible with both desktop PCs and Sony’s PlayStation 5 console. The heatsink features a black and red design, offering a functional cooling solution without requiring additional fans or power.

Performance remains a key focus of the EQ790. Sequential read speeds reach up to 7 GB/s across all models, while sequential write performance varies by capacity. The 1 TB and 2 TB versions can sustain write speeds up to 5 GB/s, and the 4 TB model delivers up to 6 GB/s. These specifications place the drive among the faster PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the market, addressing the needs of both gamers and professionals handling large data transfers.

Endurance ratings also scale with capacity. The 1 TB model is rated for 600 TBW (terabytes written), the 2 TB version doubles this figure to 1,200 TBW, and the 4 TB model offers 2,400 TBW. Lexar states that all models are designed for a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 1.5 million hours. To further support long-term reliability, the EQ790 series is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

With its combination of high transfer speeds, improved thermal design, and console compatibility, the EQ790 targets a wide range of users, including PC builders, gamers upgrading their PlayStation 5 storage, and professionals requiring fast access to large media files.

Lexar has not yet announced official pricing or exact release dates for the new EQ790 heatsink model. More details on regional availability are expected in the coming weeks.
