GPD WIN 5 Full Specifications Revealed: AMD Strix Halo Handheld Console With External Battery

YouTuber The Phawx (PhawxTV) has released the complete specifications of the upcoming GPD WIN 5, a new x86 handheld gaming console built on AMD’s Strix Halo platform. The Handheld is designed around high performance and cooling efficiency, setting it apart from conventional handhelds.

A major design difference is the absence of a built-in battery. This space is instead used for a dual-fan and quad-heatpipe cooling system, designed to manage the higher thermal output of the Strix Halo architecture. According to earlier promotional videos, the GPD WIN 5 can sustain power levels between 55W and 61W during gameplay, with Black Myth: Wukong used as a performance reference.

The system operates with an external power solution. Users can connect an optional 80Wh battery module or run the device through a direct wired power connection. While this reduces portability, it provides stable performance by avoiding the thermal and power limitations of integrated batteries.

The GPD WIN 5 will be offered in two processor versions. The flagship model uses the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, while the more affordable option is powered by the Ryzen AI Max 385. The 385 reduces the CPU core count to eight but maintains the same 32-core GPU, keeping gaming performance close to the higher-end model.

The handheld features a 7-inch display with native horizontal orientation, offering 1920×1080 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 6ms response time, and 100% sRGB coverage. It also supports ten-point touch input for added flexibility.

For memory, the device provides 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB LPDDR5x-8000 RAM. Storage expansion options include a standard M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0×4 NVMe slot, an SD 3.0 UHS-I card reader, and a dedicated BIWIN Mini SSD slot, which supports PCIe 4.0×1 speeds up to 1600MB/s.

Connectivity is handled through two USB-C ports with DisplayPort Alt support. One port delivers up to 40Gbps bandwidth for external devices. The control system features a 2000MHz polling rate joystick, Hall effect triggers, and programmable back buttons for customization.

With its unique external battery design and advanced cooling, the GPD WIN 5 targets gamers who prioritize desktop-level performance in a handheld form factor. GPD is expected to share launch details, pricing, and availability in the coming weeks.
