ASUS Made ROG RTX 5090 With 5KG Solid Gold Shroud in China

ASUS has unveiled a new version of its flagship graphics card, the ROG RTX 5090, featuring a shroud made almost entirely from solid gold. The announcement was made during an event in China, where the company displayed the card as a showcase of design and engineering.

According to reports, this unique RTX 5090 uses approximately 5 kilograms of gold in its construction. The total weight of the graphics card is said to be 7.2 kilograms, making it one of the heaviest consumer graphics cards ever produced. For comparison, most aftermarket RTX 5090 models weigh between 2.5 kg and 3 kg. The additional weight is attributed entirely to the solid gold shroud, as the heatsink and internal components appear unchanged.

Images from the event suggest that the heatsink is likely made of copper, which is already more expensive than aluminum but still standard in high-end cooling solutions. The gold shroud, however, stands out due to its thickness and raw finish. While it draws inspiration from the previously released ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab edition, which used gold plating, this new model uses full gold construction instead of surface treatment.

There is no confirmation yet on whether ASUS plans to sell the gold RTX 5090 or if it was created as a one-off concept. However, pricing estimates have already begun circulating. Analysts suggest that the card could cost upwards of $500,000, making it far more expensive than NVIDIA’s most powerful data center GPU, the Blackwell B200, which is priced at approximately $50,000. For perspective, the Dhahab edition launched at around $8,000, meaning this solid gold version could be over 60 times more expensive.

The standard RTX 5090 retails for around $2,000. Based on these figures, the gold version would be priced roughly 250 times higher, placing it in the same category as high-end luxury cars or real estate.

ASUS has not provided further details about the specifications, availability, or production plans for this GPU. Whether it will become a limited-edition release or remain a showcase model is still unknown.

This development highlights the growing trend of manufacturers experimenting with luxury materials for niche markets, though the practical use of a gold graphics card remains questionable.
