8BitDo has expanded its controller lineup once again with a new Translucent Black edition of the Ultimate 2C Bluetooth controller, designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch family. Known for its regular use of transparent and translucent finishes, the company has produced several accessories inspired by gaming hardware from the 90s and early 2000s. This new release continues that familiar design direction but takes a more subtle approach than some of the brand’s earlier models.
The controller features a smoky translucent top shell paired with a matte black bottom casing. This combination provides a faint look into the internal components without creating a visually busy appearance. Unlike the bright green tones used in products such as the Xbox Edition Retro Mechanical Keyboard, the Translucent Black Ultimate 2C aims for a more reserved look that aligns with modern gaming setups.
While the design is new, the layout and overall build will be familiar to current 8BitDo users. The Switch-specific version introduces red rings around the joysticks, distinguishing it from the Ultimate 2C Wireless model in the same colorway, which uses green rings. Aside from the cosmetic difference, the two controllers share the same shape and button placement.

Internally, 8BitDo has kept the hardware consistent with the rest of the Ultimate 2C series. The controller uses Hall effect joysticks, which help reduce the risk of drift by avoiding traditional contact-based components. It also supports 6-axis motion control, making it suitable for games on the Switch that rely on motion-based input. Optional USB Type-C wired connectivity is available for players who prefer a cable or want lower latency during gameplay. The inclusion of additional R4 and L4 buttons provides more room for custom inputs and gameplay adjustments.

Despite the translucent redesign, there are no performance or feature updates compared to earlier Ultimate 2C releases. Instead, 8BitDo is offering a new aesthetic option for players who want a controller that fits into a more muted translucent theme. Priced at $29.99, it matches the cost of previous models, keeping it in the budget-friendly category of third-party Switch controllers.
Availability is limited at launch, as 8BitDo has released this version exclusively through Best Buy in the United States. The company has not shared any details regarding wider distribution or international sales, leaving players outside the U.S. uncertain about future availability.
The Translucent Black Ultimate 2C Bluetooth controller adds another option to 8BitDo’s growing catalog, offering a mix of familiar hardware with a refreshed design that appeals to users who prefer a balanced blend of retro influence and modern styling.
